The Spirit Level - Energy & Frequency

It is all well and good to throw buzz-words around, but one that often comes up in casual conversation these days, is ‘frequency’. Like most expressions, it can mean different things to different people and yet actually, is very rooted in science. Not in a “my frequency is like..so off today” as though you‘re just having a bad hair day, but involving physics…a real exchange of energy with the environment and people - total friends or total strangers.

We’ve all been in a room where someone walks in and just lights it up. Everyone turns their heads to look in awe. What is this? It might be partly due to beauty, confidence and charisma, although we attribute it to one or all of these things when comparing what they might have and we might not. It’s that je ne sais quoi we use here in France (and everywhere else) for something we can’t quite explain.

The good news is, we can explain it. We can also explain why something feels off or “rubs us the wrong way”. We are naturally tuned in whether we think we are or not. Sometimes we ignore this feeling and get in sticky situations, but when we listen to that inner humming, we are pretty much genius-level profilers.

I used to have horses. I know if I even pulled my car up to the barn in a bad mood, it was going to be a rough day. Izzy, my greenest, most sensitive horse was a walking mirror of everything I felt at any given moment. If I didn’t center myself around him, cue the rodeo show. I didn’t label it as frequency or energy at the time, but what we were doing was exchanging and communicating on a deeper bandwidth.

Be it a strange vibe from someone or a feeling you just can’t put your finger on, or laughter that is infectious in a room, energy speaks to energy. If frequency is the field, intuition is its interpreter. We emit who we are inside. Things that align with that are drawn to it, things that aren’t fall away. When we change what we put out into the world, people feel it. Don’t believe me? Walk into a coffee shop and stare at someone who isn’t looking your way with total admiration. Do the same thing but stare with anger and you’ll see two very different reactions.

The easiest way I have learned to break it down is this. Energy is movement. Everything in our universe is moving all the time. We can do incredible things to speed it up or slow it down, much of which we are only beginning to understand, but science is always searching for new ways to harness its power. Frequency is how that energy moves, the patterns, the rhythms, the rate of vibration. Light, sound, emotions (E-motion = energy in motion), thoughts, even your furniture… everything is energy moving in its particular pattern. Intuition is when we are aligned and tuned in to the energy around us, when we are aware of the frequencies below the surface.

Why is this important in human terms? By shifting your energy, even slightly, you begin to calm and harmonize your mind and body so they can work together. That, in a nutshell is raising in your frequency. Holding onto emotions feels heavy and stagnant (think low vibrations), when you allow them to pass (crying, laughing, screaming even into a pillow, sing, whatever your method), energy flows again.

So, how do I change my frequency when I’m feeling low? I dance around like a muppet, I make ridiculous faces in the mirror till I laugh so hard I can hardly breathe (yes, I grew up an only child). I meditate. I move my body. I clap my hands to break a mind spiral, anything different to surprise the system. In public, I breathe, the easiest way to calm the mind without looking like a lunatic. If something isn’t “sitting right” with me, I literally stand up. And yes, if I am having a bad hair day, sometimes just fixing my hair can raise my frequency.

Maybe the point I’m making here isn’t to  master energy, but to remember we are energy. To move through life with enough humor, joy and awareness to stay in tune with everything around us…

Things you can do:

Listen to Solfeggio frequencies or music

432 hz music - known as Earth’s frequency - calms the mind

Listen to 528 hz music - Decreases the stress hormone, calms the nervous system and said to increase oxytocin.

Move - Take a walk, shake your body, dance, stretch. Anything that gets the energy flowing.

Meditate - Sitting in stillness even for a couple of minutes can calm the mind.

Laugh - Watch a funny movie, talk to a friend, make funny faces….

Daylight and fresh air - Step outside, feel the sun on your face, breathe fresh air, take your shoes off and stand in the grass.

Breathe - 4 count inhale through the nose, 4 count hold, 6-8 count exhale through the mouth. I try to breathe out twice as long as I inhale as a rule when breathing intentionally. Thinking of good things coming in, Another article entirely…

What is your favorite method? Please share.

You’ve all heard the joke. A monk walks up to a hotdog stand. Vendor says “what’re you having?” “Make me one with everything”. The monk hands him $20. The vendor pockets it with a smile. The monk asks “where’s my change” to which the vendor replies “Change comes from within.”

Now go enjoy your day.
