Look out this month (around the weekend of Sepetmber 13/14) for France's European Heritage Day events ("Journées de Patrimoine") A nationwide event where historic sites, museums, monuments, and even private estates open their doors — often with free entry or special discounts.

Abbaye de Chancelade (Dordogne)Founded in the 12th century, this serene abbey just outside Périgueux opens its cloisters and chapels for very rare guided tours. A living piece of Romanesque heritage in the heart of Périgord. (45 mins)

Musée Ingres Bourdelle, Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne)Home to masterpieces by celebrated painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, the museum throws open its doors this weekend 13/14 September, free of charge — a chance to experience world-class art in an historic “hôtel particulier”. For those more into music than masterpieces, look out for the annual Jazz festival in Marmande. Now in it’s 15th year, it attracts Jazz musicians from around the world. 28 - 30 September. See details in English at:
