If you ever thought wood and clay had nothing in common, Stéphane Miglierina would like a quiet word. From his workshop in Monpazier, he takes the humble tree and the stubborn lump of clay and persuades them into a marriage so harmonious you’d think they’d been courting for centuries.

His secret weapon? Raku firing. It’s a process that makes clay crackle with character, like fine laugh lines on a well-loved face. Then Stéphane pairs it with wood — walnut, cherry, whatever speaks with the right grain — and suddenly you have objects that are at once smooth and rugged, delicate yet strong. In other words, they’re a bit like the artist himself.

The lines he turns are pure and clean, the kind of geometry that would make a mathematician misty-eyed. But don’t be fooled by the restraint: these pieces are playful rebels. A vase might look poised enough to sit in a museum, yet it winks at you, daring you to put tulips in it anyway.

Stéphane has been at this since 2005, crafting objects that prove opposites don’t just attract — they positively thrive. His shop, Atelier Terre et Bois, is part boutique, part cabinet of curiosities, and entirely worth a visit. Even if you walk away empty-handed (good luck with that), you’ll leave with a newfound respect for what happens when clay and wood conspire in the hands of a man who refuses to let them misbehave separately.
